Exercise for Weigh-loss
Being active is important for any weight-loss or weight-maintenance program. When you are active, your body uses more energy (calories). And when you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight.
Diet and exercise: Is one more important?
Both are important. Diet has a stronger effect on weight-loss than physical activity; physical activity, including exercise, has a stronger effect in preventing weight regain after weight-loss.
Why exercise is important
Most weight loss occurs because of decreased caloric intake. However, evidence shows the only way to maintain weight loss is to be engaged in regular physical activity.
Weight-loss through diet without physical activity may increase frailty, especially in older people, due to age-related loss of bone density and muscle mass. Adding aerobic and resistance training to a weight loss program helps counteract the loss of bone and muscle.
Physical activity reduces various other health risks. Including:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Stroke
- Several forms of cancer
- Metabolic syndrome
Exercise will all also assist with:
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Reducing high blood pressure
- Reducing arthritis pain and associated disability
- Reducing risk for osteoporosis and falls
- Reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety
Biokinetics and Physiotherapy treatment for weight-loss
One of the biggest myths about physical therapy is that it’s just for recovering from an injury or for solving problems like a stiff neck. But it is much more than that – physical therapy can actually heal you holistically, promote wellness, and help prevent future health problems.
While weight control is nothing short of a struggle, regular physical therapy can do a lot to regulate extra weight and prevent secondary problems from developing. Obesity causes numerous comorbid and chronic conditions, and physical therapists should take a multi-pronged approach to obesity management. Including:
- Restoring flexibility
- Increasing strength
- Building better cardiovascular health
- Maintaining balance and body function
- Preventing injuries and reducing pain that can occur with excessive weight gain
- Identifying underlying conditions that cause weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Treatment of conditions related to obesity
- Calling attention to necessary lifestyle and behavioural changes
